The UHCW Knowledge and Library Services (UHCW KLS) team are pleased to offer a very warm welcome to our new intake of newly qualified and resident doctors – we hope you enjoy your time at UHCW!

In order to get the most out of the library make sure you get registered as soon as you’re able: this will give you 24-hour access to the library space as well as all of our physical resources. You can register in person at the library helpdesk (1st floor, Clinical Sciences Building), or online here: healthlibrariesmidlands.nhs.uk/join

To access our e-resources, make sure you sign up for an OpenAthens account. This is the password system that lets you access online resources subscribed to locally at UHCW and nationally via NHS England. You can self-register for your login here: openathens.nice.org.uk. It’s best to register for OpenAthens on a work-based NHS PC – if you are unable to do this, it will take longer for your account to be authorised.

We've put together a specific guide to library services for doctors at UHCW. You can find the online version here, or pick up a print copy outside of the library. It contains everything you need to know about the services and resources that are designed to support you throughout your career. Whether need evidence to support your decision-making, training to develop your information literacy skills, or support in developing your own research project, the library is here for you. You can also check out our Library Essentials guide for all the library basics: from borrowing rules to submitting article requests, it's got all the advice you need.

As you start your rotation at UHCW, you may want to take advantage of the clinical decision-making tool BMJ Best Practice. Designed to be used at the point-of-care, BMJ Best Practice can support your professional expertise and ensure the clinical decisions you make are backed by trusted evidence 24/7. It provides step-by-step guidance on diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and prevention as well as medical calculators, how-to videos and patient information leaflets.

Visit bestpractice.bmj.com/info to get started. You'll need your OpenAthens account in order to login: if you need help getting access please ask the UHCW Library team – we’ll be happy to guide you! Training on all of our e-resources is available free of charge to UHCW staff. Check out our training offer here: uhcwlibrary.org/training

The UHCW KLS team wish you all the very best of luck for the next stage in your career and we look forward to welcoming you to the library soon!
