A very warm welcome to all junior doctors joining us this month – we hope you enjoy your time at UHCW!

In order to get the most out of the library make sure you get registered as soon as you’re able: this will give you 24 hours access to the library space as well as all of our physical resources. You can register at the Helpdesk, or by downloading, completing and returning this form to library@uhcw.nhs.uk along with the first 5 numbers on the back of your Trust ID badge.

To access our e-resources, make sure you sign up for an OpenAthens account. This is the password system that lets you access online resources subscribed to locally at UHCW and nationally via NICE/Health Education England.

You can self-register for your login here:https://openathens.nice.org.uk/

It’s best to register for Athens on a work-based NHS PC – if you are unable to do this, it will take longer for your account to be authorised.

As you start your rotation at UHCW, you may want to take advantage of two invaluable resources provided by Health Education England’s national NHS Knowledge and Library Services team. They have funded online access to over 130 medical handbooks published by Oxford University Press (OUP) and the clinical decision-making tool, BMJ Best Practice.

Both resources give clinicians an additional boost to their professional expertise and reassuring them they are making the right decisions backed by trusted evidence 24/7.

All titles in the Oxford Medical Handbooks series as well as Oxford Handbooks in Nursing and the ‘Emergencies In…’ series are included while BMJ Best Practice provides step by step guidance on diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and prevention as well as medical calculators, how-to videos and patient information leaflets. You can get the handbooks at HEE/OUP site and BMJ Best Practice at bmj.com/hee . Both are available via NHS OpenAthens (instructions here) or if you need help getting access please ask the UHCW Library team – we’ll be happy to guide you!

Training on all of our e-resources is available free of charge to UHCW staff: check out the training pages of the website for more detail on the courses available.

The UHCW Library team wish you all the very best of luck for the next stage in your career and we look forward to welcoming you to the library soon!
