Have you ever reached the end of a novel and thought “Well, I wish it hadn’t ended like that”? Now is your chance to re-write the script and tell us how YOU envisage the perfect ending!
We’re looking for budding writers to enter our creative writing competition by dreaming up their own endings to a selection of modern novels and classic literature.
Do you think Romeo ought to have checked Juliet a bit more thoroughly before he popped open that poison?
What if Frankenstein’s monster DIDN’T regret the murders he committed?
What if Charlie couldn’t convince the rest of Bucket family to move to the Chocolate Factory?
Tell us your own inspired endings! We’ll be selecting a winner and a runner-up from the submissions, who will win a £20 and £10 high-street gift voucher, respectively.
Here are the 10 selected works for you to choose from:
-
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
-
Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare
-
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
-
Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
-
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
-
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
-
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
-
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
-
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
-
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Submissions need to be between 300-500 words and submitted in a PDF format to library@uhcw.nhs.uk. Please include your name, department, contact number, and the title of the story you are rewriting in your email submission.
The competition is open to all UHCW staff and placement students, and we know you are busy professionals so this may be something you choose to do in your own time. Therefore, the closing date for submissions is the 31st December 2024.
We’ll also be publishing selected submissions on the library website. If you would rather remain anonymous, or opt-out of having your writing shared, please let us know in your submission email. More details are in the attached submission criteria.
If you have any questions about the competition, get in touch: library@uhcw.nhs.uk
Best of luck!
