This autumn, the UHCW KLS team are proud to take part in The Big Tasty Read, a national celebration of reading, food and community hosted by The Reading Agency in partnership with BBC Arts.

Reading and food are fantastic ways to bring people together and what better way to honour the rich cultural heritage of our workforce than through the flavours that shape your homes? Therefore, we're inviting UHCW staff to share their favourite family recipes to help launch a new book collection this October.

Why take part in The Big Tasty Read?

  • Celebrate Cultural Heritage
Food is deeply tied to identity, memory, and belonging. By sharing recipes from our diverse staff, we want to recognise and celebrate the many heritages, traditions, and life stories within the NHS.

  • Bridge Reading & Everyday Life
The Big Tasty Read encourages reading through the universal appeal of food: from exploring recipes inspired by books to storytelling through shared meals. Our existing cookbook collections and new Big Tasty Reading List will help support this.

  • Sustainability and Wellbeing
We want to help you to grow your own ingredients to try out these recipes by linking the campaign to our UHCW Seed Library. Gardening is a great mindful activity that can help boost your wellbeing.

How to Get Involved

Call for Recipes & Stories
We invite any member of staff at UHCW to submit a favourite family recipe (along with any story, memory, or cultural context you’d like to share). This could be a traditional main dish, dessert, snack, or anything meaningful to you and your family. Ingredients and methods are a must-have, but if you have any photos you'd like to share, they would be most welcome.

We'll be showcasing these recipes in the library at the end of October, alongside a new collection of novels, biographies and cookbooks to help provide some kitchen inspiration. To be included in the the display, we'll need your submissions before Friday 17th October 2025.

If you’d like to share a recipe with us (and would be happy to have it on display in the library) please get in touch! You can send your recipes to either Beth.Jackson@uhcw.nhs.uk or Keri.BramfordHale@uhcw.nhs.uk
