At the end of 2024,UHCW Knowledge and Library Services launched a creative writing competition called "Endings... Reimagined!" in which we encouraged UHCW staff to re-write the endings to a selection of modern novels and classic literature.
Since the deadline for submissions closed at the end of January, our judges have been working behind the scenes to review the entries. They were thoroughly impressed by the quality of the writing, noting that it was a challenging task to select the winners due to the exceptional creativity displayed in each submission.
We're pleased to announce the winners have now been selected and presented with their prizes earlier this week. Those winners are:
First Prize (£20 high-street gift voucher):
· Author: Nick Sturges-Alex, Programme Delivery Manager
· Story: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
Runner-up (£10 high-street gift voucher):
· Author: Dr Arvind Dosanjh FY1, Respiratory Medicine
· Story: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
We've attached the winning entries to this post if you would like to read them!
Here's what Nick had to say about taking part in the competition:
I really enjoyed taking part in the writing competition, ‘Endings Reimagined’. It was a great idea to take a well-known book and consider how it might have ended differently! I chose a book that I knew really well from my first reading as a child some, well let’s just say, considerable years ago! Although I’ve never written in this format previously, I have always been interested in all forms of writing and I view the competition as a chance to have a go at something that I’d always wanted to. To get recognition for this was incredible, and this has really encouraged me to consider taking part in other creative writing competitions.
We'd like to thank everyone who took the time to participate in the competition. The standards were very high and we are very grateful for our busy colleagues who gave up their free time to show us their creativity. A special thank you goes to our esteemed judges: Imrana Ghumra, Head of Knowledge Services, Elizbeth Fitzhugh, Net Zero Clinical Lead and Subie Scholz, Research Sister, who dedicated their time to carefully review and evaluate each entry.
We are also really pleased to have received such positive feedback from our competition entrants and we look forward to offering more creative writing opportunities for #TeamUHCW. Stay tuned for updates and announcements later this year...
